Nuestra Tierra: Here and There

Set to grace the walls of the Zhou B Art Center in collaboration with the Oh Art Foundation, "Nuestra Tierra: Here and There" presents a compelling examination of bicultural identity as envisioned by nine Mexican-American artists. Scheduled from September 19 to November 14, 2025, this exhibition emerges from the unique confluence of heritage and personal experience, reflecting the dynamic interplay between cultural roots and contemporary American life.

About

The concept for "Nuestra Tierra: Here and There" was born out of a transformative community project titled "The Olmec Trails," which took place in Chicago in 2024. This initiative organized by the Mexican Cultural Center of Dupage and the National Museum of Mexican Art brought together many artists of Mexican descent, providing them with a space to engage deeply with each other and their cultural narratives. The project not only facilitated a creative synergy among the participants but also inspired them to extend their communal bonds into an expansive exhibition. Out of this gathering, an independent artist collective of 9 artists emerged, committed to exploring and expressing the nuanced stories of Mexican-American life through their art.

The exhibition is designed to showcase the interwoven lives and dual identities of first to third-generation Mexican-American immigrants. By displaying works that incorporate traditional Mexican muralism and contemporary art practices, the show offers a rich tapestry of symbols, narratives, and artistic methods that articulate the complex identities of its artists. The dualities of "here" and "there"—both symbolically and culturally—are navigated and expressed through a vibrant artistic lens.

Each participating artist contributes their unique perspective, influenced by their generational ties to both Mexican and American cultures. The influence of their muralist backgrounds is particularly poignant, echoing the grandeur and accessibility of Mexico’s public art tradition while infusing it with modern aesthetic and thematic concerns. This blend of the historic and the contemporary not only enriches the artistic dialogue within the exhibition but also makes it profoundly accessible and resonant with diverse audiences.

Located in Chicago, a city with a significant Mexican-American population, the exhibition is poised to resonate deeply with local and international visitors alike. It aims to foster an understanding and appreciation of the intricate process of identity formation within a multicultural framework. "Nuestra Tierra: Here and There" will serve as a catalyst for cultural dialogue, offering educational programs, artist talks, and interactive workshops that engage and enrich the community.

In partnership with the Oh Art Foundation, the exhibition enhances its educational and community engagement through various planned activities. These initiatives are designed to promote deeper interaction between the artists and the public, encouraging a communal exploration of the themes presented.
